We walked in silence to his room. Saturday night, going to the hot guy’s apartment, just the two of us.

Mentally, I was freaking out. It wasn’t like I’d never been in the guys’ dorms before. At the same time, consequences could get rough for breaking co-habitation rules, as they were called, even though hanging out in a boy’s room wasn’t the same is co-habitating. I’d never want to actually live with one of the guys here. Nia and I kept our room way cleaner than any of them.

Inside, Shane’s apartment layout was opposite of mine and Nia’s, where the kitchen area was on the left and the bedroom and bathroom to the left of the living room. The furnishings were the same since they were owned by the school. Couch, chair, some tables.

“You should come resale shopping with us sometime,” I remarked noting the bare walls.

“With who, you and Nia?”

Had I said that out loud? “Um, yeah. We usually use one of our weekend activity options to go to this flea market at the fairgrounds. We got in trouble last year because we bought too much to pack into the academy van. Nia found a bright orange lamp with this knotted rope stuff as part of the base. My mom called it macramé. That and an orange mosaic coffee table. Nia was into orange last year.”

Shane and I were standing close, just inside the door.

“You want to sit down?” he asked. “I’ll order take-out.”

Since I was awkwardly lingering by the door, I did just that and squeezed myself on one end of the couch.

“You didn’t get dinner?”

He shrugged. “I’d rather order in.”

Shane opened the nearest drawer in the kitchen and pulled out a stack of take-out menus. “I’d take you up on the resale shopping thing, but I don’t think your friend likes me much.”

I chewed at the inside of my lip. “Nia is protective. Of me, and us. The school, I mean.”

“You probably missed her today at the tournament.”

“Is it that obvious?”

He leaned against the counter, holding up a menu for a sub shop for me to see. I gave him a thumbs down. “It seems like it’s been tense between you and Nia. This probably isn’t the senior year you expected.”

Hearing my own thoughts come from his mouth was a trip. “No. It’s not.” He held up another menu—Chinese food, but not the good place. “Let me see these.” I got up and took the stack. “You don’t even have the ramen menu. You’re missing out. They do delivery and package all the ingredients in a bunch of small containers that you can re-use for leftovers.”

Shane watched me with an irritatingly amused smile.

“Let me guess. You don’t eat leftovers.”

Shane laughed. I noticed he didn’t deny my accusation. “You’re lucky to be so close with Nia. The guys I’ve roomed with at other schools, we never ended up close. My family moved around too much. I was always the new guy. A private coach and tutor was the plan for senior year until Dad enrolled me at Six Lakes at the last second.
